What does it take to keep the trust of the most demanding users?

THE OPPORTUNITY
I had the honor of working with the team at Mosko Moto, legends in the world of adventure motorcycling, despite being a relative newcomer over the last decade. Mosko needed help launching their first off-motorcycle luggage system, for those who fly internationally with their equipment before starting motorcycle adventures, as well as a new lightweight pannier and modular storage pouches.

The challenge with the rolling luggage was fitting the vast amount of gear needed for successful trips into an airport and weight limit-friendly package. With the lightweight panniers, the difficulty lay in creating a minimalist solution that was easy to use and could still survive being crashed in rough terrain.

THE SOLUTION
The Mosko Mule looks giant, and it is, but it also can be divided into two components at the check-in desk to clear costly overweight charges. A system, the Mule includes removable packing cubes that fit helmets, boots, tools, and so on in a way that is intuitive and reduces the frustration of searching for equipment or finding it damaged upon arrival.

The Alpine 30 features a clean, minimal exterior, a removable liner bag for quick takeaway at the end of the day, and a robust mounting system that fits any rack system.

The MOLLE pouches include a new small pouch that can be quickly removed when you arrive at a dusty outpost for water and snacks, and a large pouch with a new spout access port for hydration reservoirs with built-in failsafes.

Not if, but when

More than any other category I’ve worked in, adventure motorcycling is brutal on equipment. Crashes happen, but we worked to source rugged fabrics and hardware to survive. Seams reinforced, impact zones layered.

Modularity that adapts to individuals

From first-hand accounts of users’ frustrations with travelling with equipment necessary for a multi-day off-road adventure, updates were made. ID cards ensure that gear doesn’t get mixed up, changing mats are built into boot bags, carry straps and pockets added to helmet storage to carry separately for more space.

Build, test, break, repeat

Mosko is known for their relentless testing regimen, and these products are no different. I was invited to join the team on a testing session over a week in the Mojave desert, where everything that could happen, did. Insights born of that work sent some concepts back to the drawing board, and confirmed the functionality of others.

What People Are Saying

“The bag and the engine guard took the brunt of the slide. There’s more damage to the engine guard than the bag!”

—Adrian Najera user review

“the Mule is far and above the most flexible, dynamic, and versatile gear bag I’ve ever used.”

— Upshift Magazine review

“The attention to detail, thoughtful features, and ability to expand and collapse make it a standout choice for any motorcyclist who loves to travel.”
